She went to see him in concert. His singing and movements and passion entranced her. A month later, there was another concert. She went again and all her focus was on him. Did he catch her tranced gaze, it didn’t matter because she felt the endless moments and knew he has seen her. That night, right after the music was done and she was on her way home she sent him a message saying, “I’d like to meet you”.
A couple of days later the message was read and replied, “yes, why not! :)”.
On Thursday, half an hour late she appeared outside his coffeeshop. Her pounding heart yielded to calm control. She went in the door, scanned for him and was relieved he wasn’t visible. She stood infront of the cashier and took her time looking for the right thing to order. The young man was bored and very tense. Just before paying, her eyes looked up and their eyes locked. There stood a lovely guy, dumbed and surprised, an apparent smile of relief and eyes full of expectation. She has been holding her breath, shocked and relieved. “Hiiii..”,
“Hi” he said back. Did he walk towards her first or did she extend her hand longing to shake his hand first. They shook hands, both stupid with big smiles.
“I’m so sorry. Really am. I totally forgot about today. I was on my way out”. He showed her his backpack. “If you were a minute later you would’ve missed me.”
“Oh. I have been circling the area not finding your cafe. That’s why I’m half an hour late.”
Apologizing, he asked her to give him a moment to postpone his plans.
She turned to pay for her drink, and thought that the awkward young boy sees how hard her hands were shaking as she fumbled through the notes in her purse.
She thought about how tense he was too. She knew that they have connected on a basic level of attraction.
He looked up from his phone and promised to meet her upstairs in a minute.
She left him fumbling on his phone and climbed the stairs. The unexpected and welcomed anticipation of something interesting and good is welling in her heart.
The most comfortable seats meant they would have to sit together on a sofa. She chose an armchair and an opposite stool and sat down. The pack of cigarettes and the lighter were pulled from the handbag. The ashtray is empty days old dirty. Crossing her legs and leaning back she saw him climbing the stairs, and she noticed how the owner of the place himself manages to bump his head on the low ceiling. The guys over there laughed and he joked, she turned away and pretended not to know about it.
He came to her and sat down. He had 20 minutes that he could spare. “I knew there was something today that I forgot about. I’m so sorry.”
During the next 45 minutes, his nervousness was clear in how long he talked about himself and his music. He asked her only one question. She told him she wasn’t a model, but a mother.
